Game Intro Major Powers Background What once thrived as a small community in the midwestern parts of the land of Elterra has evolved into several major powers. Their history includes millennia of achievements in culture, linguistics, faith, and the arts. Sadly, darkness resides in the deepest hollows of the human heart, and acts of war, plunder, and slaughter soon ensued. Greed drove the nations to wage wars in which mindless killings were permitted to continue day after day in the name of accumulating more territory. Years of continued strife gradually gave birth to three great factions: Ashland, Zan Korrel, and Evdar. Ashland took control over most of the land, with Evdar claiming the northwestern territories and the Zan Korrel controlling the shores. This was the situation for many years, until the arrival of new settlers. When the new settlers arrived, they brought with them new fashions and languages. During a time of peace, the people of Elterra learned new technologies for crafting armor, as well as the mysterious powers of alchemy. Having brought new knowledge to Elterra, the newcomers quickly earned their place among the native peoples. Thirty years passed quickly, and as the saying goes, good times do not last forever. Religious and cultural clashes with the newcomers became more frequent. Accordingly, tolerance levels were gradually wearing thin. What finally set a fateful chain of events into motion was a drastic increase in taxes on the newcomers. Unable to tolerate their treatment any longer, the Kirin-worshipping newcomers staged a rebellion and usurped the throne, putting their leader, Fusu, in power and declaring the beginning of the Kirin Era. A massive war erupted as a result. With technologically superior weapons and alchemy, the Kirin Empire in the East held the upper hand in all battles. Nevertheless, the Evdar and the Zan Korrel, with their mysterious magiks, were forces to be reckoned with. In the midst of all these conflicts, a divine artifact in the east known as the Dimensional Gate was somehow damaged. Strange beings began to appear in Elterra. The demise of the Kirin Empire was inevitable and irreversible, as various feudal lords with lofty ambitions started to eye the seat of power, waiting for the most opportune moment to strike. With the passing of the last ruler of Fusu's lineage, all chaos broke loose. The saints of the land could not bear to see innocent civilians caught in this mindless war, forced to live with the hardships that would ensue from the blind greed of those who held power. They led the homeless, soldiers tired of all the fighting, and even a few of the former ruling class, who did not wish to be part of the violence anymore. All of them traveled through the Dimensional Gate into the unknown. "At the very least," they thought, "things cannot be worse than in our war-ravaged homeland." The world they found was a utopia compared to the chaos they had left behind. It was a land where everything was beautiful and whole. There was no war, no hate, and no conflict in their new land. Through unity and goodwill, these refugees quickly built up a whole new civilization for themselves there, with their own army and culture. It was a place they could call home. All of this was accomplished in a brief 30 years. Continued explorations into the mysteries of their new land have started to reveal bad tidings for all those living there - very bad tidings indeed. Major Powers Bohren The Kirin Empire Beliefs: Alchemy Capital: Jun Ma City The Kirin Empire originated in the eastern regions of Elterra. Legend has it that its citizens were led by the Prince of the West, Fusu, through the Dimensional Gate into the continent of Elterra many years ago, eventually forming their empire. The populace, comprising of a mixture of common folks and nobility, then settled down with their valuable knowledge of alchemy and cultural heritage. It was this knowledge that allowed its citizens to survive the harshest conditions of war and the rampages of demons. Though ravaged, the citizens of Bohren never forgot their noble heritage, and have been strengthening themselves for a future comeback. The Kirin Empire has a centralized government system, formed by the later generations of migrants, and includes the Monarch, courtiers and priests. Its divine beast is the Jade Kirin. Introduction The Kirin Empire lies north of Elterra, and features fertile lands and a high population. It boasts the greatest military strength and strongest economy. The Kirin Empire brought craftsmen and artisans from the east to build its capital city, its wealth and prosperity weakened only by outbreaks of war and the rampages of demons. Despite this, its citizens strongly believe that they are the descendants of the Kirin, with noble blood flowing through their veins, making them the true heirs of the lands of Elterra. Policies: unite the lands, eliminate Ashland and drive out the Zan Korrel, and exterminate all the demons from the central regions. External Affairs Diplomacy The Kirin Empire is currently at war with Ashland. They also have rampaging demons to worry about. It is rumored that the Monarch has started constructing a secret tunnel that will pass through the central region straight into Ashland territory. Military Approach Though the country of Evdar lies closer to Bohren borders, it does not pose as much of a threat as the demons in the central regions or the forces of Ashland. There is less of a chance of the Bohren diverting their military strength toward attacking Evdar. Zan Korrel has removed itself from neutrality and has set itself against both Ashland and Bohren. However, the Bohren Monarch discovered abnormalities in Zan Korrel' sudden change in diplomacy and has decided to send someone to check out the matter. Internal Affairs Land Land under direct control: Kellead Village, Northgate, and the Norlow Plains. Military Strength There are 3 contingents forming the core of the Kirin Military: Praetorians: the imperial guards of the Monarch, they govern the security of the city. They boast 8,000 soldiers per troop for a total of 64,000 men. Central Division: comprised of 42 independent, active war cohorts, it is subdivided into North and South divisions. Includes an estimated 6,000 to 7,000 men per cohort for a total of 284,000 men Flying Cavaliers: the border guards of Bohren are a combination of Bohren Taoists and Praetorian elites. Maple Alchemist Zhou Yun Tian commands this division. Economy Farming and craftsmanship is the driving force behind the Kirin Empire' economy. Key exports include provisions, tea, woven goods, and porcelain. The population stands at 5.396 million, with a yearly revenue of 3.237 million Gold. Culture This eastern culture' people are characteristically honest and hardworking. Focuses heavily on farming and light commerce. Strict practices within the caste system emphasize their beliefs, righteousness, mannerisms, and loyalty. Taoism is the national religion, with a strong emphasis on alchemy. Ashland The Phoenix Empire Beliefs: Followers of Illuflamos (the Illuflamos, or worship of the legendary Phoenix, is a national religion with its roots in the deserts) Capital: Lotus City When the first settlers reached the southwestern region of Elterra, they were shocked by the barren desert and snowy mountain range before them. Driven by sheer resilience and aided by advanced agricultural technologies, the founders of Ashland managed to work with the local tribes and united the oases of the region. They established the magnificent Lotus City, a single spark amid miles of frosty wasteland. Beyond the city walls, the punishing cold continues to remind people of the perseverance of their ancestors and the constant danger that lurks around every corner. The Phoenix Empire is governed by its church. Its leader rules the land through the will of their gods. The nation itself is a coalition of many local tribes. There are a total of 12 high priests who govern the Empire. All of them answer to one man, High Priest Tai Si, who can hear the words their gods. The legendary Phoenix is said to be watching over the whole empire. Introduction The Phoenix Empire is located in the mountainous region of the south. Most of the empire consists of deserts, cliffs and frozen peaks. Few crops can survive the harsh cold that sweeps through the nation. However, the mountain range is rich with ores and minerals. As such, most of its citizens are nomads, miners, or traders. Policies: expatriate the Kirin Empire and suppress the 3 remaining nations to regain control of Elterra and banish the surviving demons in the central region. External Affairs Diplomacy Currently at war with the Kirin Empire. Although both armies are roughly equal in strength, the people of Ashland are naturally skilled combatants. With the blessing of the Phoenix, the Phoenix Empire has managed to halt the Kirin Empire's advance. Ashland's people believe that all life is insignificant compared to the vastness of the earth. Their strong beliefs help unite the people under the charge of the 12 high priests. Military Approach The Phoenix Empire adopts a neutral philosophy towards Evdar. Both sides have benefited from the trade and business dealings between the 2 nations. Since the Tai'Gong battle, Zan Korrel has abandoned its neutrality. It is now at war with both Ashland and Bohren. Recently, the High Priest has discovered indications of Zan Korrel's involvement in the ongoing war with the Kirin Nation. Uncovering the role Zan Korrel plays in the war is now of utmost importance. Internal Affairs Land Lands under direct control: Ancient Snowridge, Polar Desert, and Sinking Tillplain Military Strength Ashland's military structure is much simpler than that of the Bohren. There is no organization or rank system among the Ashland warriors. Those between 15 and 50 years of age are committed to farming in times of peace, and conscripted into the army of Ashland in times of war. However, belittling them would be a grave mistake; the Spartan-like training they receive coupled with the harsh conditions they live in daily makes them fearsome warriors indeed. Flame Guard: the elite of the army of the Phoenix, taking orders directly from the High Priest, they are in charge of protecting the capital as well as the altar. Illuflamos Guard: the border guards of Ashland, they are led by Illuflamos Priest Sikong Ten. Economy The Phoenix Empire's economy is driven by pasturing flocks, mining, and trading. A full 70% of the Empire's income is dependent on trade. Following the most recent war, its population stands at 4.72 million. The national income is over 2.78 million Gold. Culture Initially inclined toward strength and fire, the nation developed its own brand of culture for interacting with the east. The people believe in the practice of Hesphaestus. The people hold the High Priest, who is well-versed in the teachings of the scriptures, in the highest esteem. The Zan Korrel Beliefs: Worship Bahamut, based on certain remains they believe to be Serpent Bones, the fragments of bones from their god. Capital: Cloud City Similar to Ashland, the Zan Korrel are natives of Elterra. The race consists of exiled Ashlanders and costal villagers who expand aggressively to take over fertile lands for the nation's survival. They worship Bahamut, and the country's highest-ranking officials offer it sacrifices, while the Shamans convey the messages of their god. Natural resources provided an added growth advantage to the Zan Korrel. They are staunch believers of their religion and each generation is charged with the responsibility of passing that belief to the next generation. Their religion is the highest priority in the eyes of the Zan Korrel. It guides the way of life to the extent that any form of blasphemy is deemed an act of treason punishable by death. The Zan Korrel target wealthy nations as a means of aggressive expansion beyond their limited territory. Bahamut, in reality, is controlled by Chi You, an ancient demon. All the demon cares about is its own revival. As such, Chi You corrupted the ruler of the Zan Korrel and manipulated him into embracing military expansion. This has made the Zan Korrel a common enemy of both Ashland and Bohren. The Zan Korrel secretly sabotaged the development of both Ashland and Bohren and created sparks of war between the two, reaping benefits from the conflict. They occupied Dong'Xun Port with considerable military strength while secretly searching for the divine weapons in preparation for the revival of Chi You. Minor Powers Minor Powers Evdar Beliefs: worship the White Eagle (the nomads worship of the White Eagle because they think it is the symbol of the spirits of their forefathers. The word of the White Eagle is absolute to them.) Main City: Beryl City Evdar is made up of united tribes residing in the northwestern areas of Elterra. Most of their lands are desolate and brackish. The hills stretch all the way to the horizons. Eagles and wild horses are a common sight in these desolate lands. The people of Evdar have always led a nomadic life, braving harsh weather to survive. With the unity of the tribes and the introduction of advanced technologies, the Evdar civilization has witnessed much growth and progress in recent times. Accordingly, the culture and linguistics of the Evdar are highly esteemed among the outside world. However, the existence of a few warlike tribes among the Evdar has resulted in increased cases of violence and plunder against larger nations. Recently, tensions have risen between Evdar and these other nations. Dreamchasers Artifacts belonging to a lost civilization may sometimes be found in the land of Elterra. Dreamchasers pursue these lost artifacts with no regard for worldly affairs. Their dream is to resurrect or rediscover the lost civilization. As such, they have been preparing themselves physically and mentally for the day of reckoning. They have adopted a neutral stance toward the other nations of Elterra. To them, the demise of the lost civilization is a lesson to them about what should never be forgotten: taking sides is often akin to planting the seeds of war. Taking a neutral and balanced view to everything and everybody is a key principle in their lives. Avatars Avatry is a spellcasting art almost lost over time. If not for the Zan Korrel, who delved into the research of this arcane art, it may never have returned to its former glory. Avatars draw their power from ancient arts, and have spread themselves all over the land, living in seclusion. However, they are well connected with each other, for Avatry allows them to communicate over long distances via telepathy. These tribesmen will always keep in mind the disasters that arose from the abuse of these supernatural powers. As such, they have sworn themselves to secrecy while protecting the order of the universe. Should the world call upon them in a time of need, they will surface again. Tendou A group of likeminded warriors who devote themselves solely to the task of ridding the world of demons, the name "Tendou" means "to dish out justice and punishment in the name of the heavens." Flame Tribe An ancient tribe that embraces the old ways of living and communing with nature, they shun the technologies and cultures of the current age. These barbaric tribesmen believe solely in the power of fire, and in turn, worship the God of Fire, Hephaestus. Communication breakdowns have led them to believe any outsiders are advocates of the Devil, whom they believe will meet with a deserving end. However, despite their "backward" ways, they possess knowledge of advanced building techniques. The presence of large structures erected next to their villages is concrete proof of their skills. Dragonkin Tribe A mysterious tribe cut off from the outside world, their physiques have been reported to be taller than those of normal human beings, with scaly exteriors on various parts of their bodies. They call themselves Dragonkins, or "descendants of dragons" in common speak. These unique beings possess a superior level of intellect and cultural learning. In fact, their superiority in physique and mental aspects are linked to their duty as sentinels watching over the Dragon.
